Dr. Palermo has maintained a full-time faculty appointment at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry since 2009. He is the Acting Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and discipline coordinator of the predoctoral implant program. Other academic responsibilities at the dental school include directorship of the didactic implant curriculum for both the DMD and Advanced General Dentistry Residency Programs, directorship of the implant honors program, and co-directorship of post-doctoral grand-rounds. Dr.Palermo is originally from Toronto Canada, where he completed an Honors Bachelor of Science degree in 2001 at the University of Toronto. He is a graduate of Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry’s DMD and AEGD programs (’05 and ’06), and received his specialty certificate in prosthodontics from the University of Rochester in 2009 (where he maintains an adjunct faculty position in the Division of Prosthodontics). Research interests at Temple University include dental materials testing to decrease prosthetic implant complications. Dr.Palermo is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, is the lead author of the text-book series “Fundamentals of Contemporary Prosthodontics” (Wiley-Blackwell Publications set for release Fall 2013), and maintains a part-time private practice limited to prosthodontics and implantology in Scranton PA.

Academic Administrative Experience (Temple University School of Dentistry)

  • Designed and direct Interdisciplinary Implantology Curriculum comprising 2 didactic courses, 1 laboratory course, and 1 honors program
  • Coordinator of clinical Predoctoral Implantology – Coordinate clinical treatment of implant cases between Predoctoral dental students, and the Departments of: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Graduate Periodontology, and Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program
  • Designed and authored Predoctoral Implant Clinical Protocol – a document that details the credentials of faculty for involvement with implant care, implant case flow, categories of faculty supervision, checklist for implant surgery, checklist for implant restoration
  • Designed and authored laboratory manual for predoctoral implantology laboratory course – diagnostic wax-up, surgical guides, implant placement, final implant impression, abutment selection and restoration.
  • Management of 3 clinical grants that support the interdisciplinary implantology clinical curriculum for 250 undergraduate dental students in senior level years of training including:
    • Straumann – Clinical implantology - $125,000 annual grant (2009 – Present)
    • Nobel Biocare – Clinical implantology - $50,000 annual grant (2010 – Present)
